Netflix Player by Roku

Au revoir, Apple TV. The new Netflix Player by Roku ($100) lets you watch movies and TV shows from your Netflix queue, right on your TV, without ever going to the mail box. The streaming set-top box provides instant access to more than 10,000 movies and TV shows (currently about 10% of the Netflix library). Surprisingly compact (approximately 5″ x 5″ x 2″), the Netflix Player features Wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), HDMI and Component Video, and comes with a simple remote that lets you make selections, rate movies, and fast-forward or rewind video streams. The best part is that there’s no extra costs in all of this. You just have to buy the box and have a Netflix subscription. Awesome.

Update: There was a decent review of the Roku on DL.TV this week. It only makes me want one even more.

Gmail invites part V

Okay, so now that isnoop.net’s gmail invite spooler has been shut down, I’ve found a new vehicle to give out my invites. It’s at bytetest.com. So if you need 2GB+ of email space, Lord knows we all do, go to bytetest.com and sign up already. Gmail r0×0rs!

How to use Gmail as your SMTP server

One of the little-known freebies Gmail offers is a portable SMTP server to send mail from any network for any email address.

Travellers who use their ISP’s SMTP server to send mail with their email program (like Thunderbird or Outlook Express) can find themselves in a bind if they’re on another network away from home, like at a coffee shop, airport or visiting relatives. But if you’ve got a free Gmail account (get one here) you can use Google’s SMTP server to send mail through Thunderbird from you@example.com Update: Google rewrites the from address to your Gmail address..

Gmail invites part IV

I was donating my gmail invites to isnoop.net for a long while, but gmail shut it down. I still get about 50 invites every couple of days, so if you need one please ask. They are here for you.

Gmail invites part III

Instead of giving out Gmail invites to individuals, I donated all my invites to isnoop.net gmail invite spooler.

From their website at time of writing:

Currently, we have 701,045 invites available to share. Thanks to the generosity of folks like you, we’ve distributed 673,361 invites since this page went up on Sep 13, 2004.

Gmail has recently more than doubled my storage capacity from 1GB to over 2GB (and still climbing). If it wouldn’t be such an administration nightmare, I would move all my users at work over to Gmail. ;)

SpamAssassin 3.0 was announced today on Slashdot.

Its use of SURBL along with Bayes auto learning make it seem like this solution is the one to beat. It looks like they’ve introduced a new logo as well.
